Overview

Explore Portugal’s beautiful Douro Valley by Train.

Your week begins in the bustling northern city of Porto, Portugal’s gateway to the Atlantic since Roman times. The city is famous for its medieval architecture, its riverfront café culture, and its port wines – our resident guide will give you an introduction to day-to-day life in Porto, its fascinating history and its robust, seasonal cuisine.

Your next stop is the grandiose Sao Bento train station – the start point for your journey on the famous Douro Valley Line. Sao Bento’s elaborate azulejo artwork is quite a contrast to the charmingly-dishevelled trains which are the backbone of the Linho Douro. Gruff 1960s diesel engines, the retired workhorses of Portugal’s state-owned railway network, pull tousled 1970s coaches through a stunning landscape of terraced vineyards and remote olive farms. What might be seen as a heritage railway in other countries is alive and well here in Portugal, and it’s to be applauded: it’s also been under threat of modernisation for over twenty-years – now’s the time to ride the line before it’s gone.

Your destination is the peaceful riverfront hamlet of Pinhao – the true centre of port wine production. On foot and by boat, you’ll see how almost every acre of this undulating landscape is turned over to wine production. Grape yields are often the lowest in the country, and yet Douro wines are coveted for their complex and intense flavour. The Romans established the first vineyards here over 2000 years ago, and their mantra of ‘quality over quantity’ has withstood the test of time.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday with a direct flight to Porto. Our driver will collect you on arrival for the transfer to Casa Camelia on the north bank of the River Douro
Your morning begins with a walking tour of Porto – it’s a great introduction to the city, its layout and its history, with visits to the Sé Cathedral, the Mercado do Balhao, the Praca da Liberdade, and the Palacio da Bolsa. Your afternoon’s free – you might like to cross the iconic Ponte de Dom Luis I Bridge into twin city Vila Nova de Gaia, for a guided tour of the famous port wine lodges.
Your day’s free – you might like to ride the city’s vintage Linho 1 tram, heading downriver to the mouth of the Douro at Foz. In the afternoon, (and if you’re feeling energetic), you could climb the 240 steps to the top of the Clerigos Tower – the 75m high baroque bell tower of the Igreja dos Clerigos - for a 360⁰ view of the whole city.
Our driver will transfer you to Porto’s famous Sao Bento train station, where you’ll catch the Linho Douro train to Pinhao. You could see the Douro Valley line as forgotten and neglected, but we find the lack of modernisation is one of the line’s many charms. The suburbs of Porto are gradually replaced by rustic villages and isolated olive farms, and the views grow evermore magnificent as the railway snakes its way up the Douro.

Our driver will collect you on arrival for the short transfer to the riverfront Vintage House Hotel
Your morning’s free so you can explore Pinhao on foot. Wine has been produced in the valleys of the Alto Douro for over 2,000 years, and whilst it’s most-famous outside of Portugal for its port production, the region also produces an equal quantity of table wines.

In the afternoon, you’ll take a riverboat cruise up the Douro for an alternative view of Pinhao’s vineyards and olive groves.
You’ll return to Pinhao train station, where you’ll catch the morning train Pocinho – the very end of the Linha Douro. Arguably the most-beautiful section of the line, the journey from Pinhao to Pocinho is certainly the most-rugged and remote - passing through the narrow Cachao da Valeira river gorge. There’s a short pause whilst the locomotive switches ends, then you’ll head back to Pinhao: look out for the Ponte Ferradosa bridge and the Barragem de Valeira Dam on the return journey.

In the afternoon, you’ll a take a tour of the winery at Quinta do Bomfim - part of the Symington Family Estates: the largest producer of port wine in the region, and owner of the Cockburn’s, Graham’s and Dow’s vintages.
You’ll take the lunchtime train downriver and back to Porto, for your final afternoon and evening at The Rebello in twin-city Vila Nova da Gaia.

From its position on the south bank of the river, your hotel’s rooftop bar and restaurant has one of the best views of Porto and the Ponta Luis I, particularly when the city is lit up at night.
Our driver will transfer you to the airport for your flight home.
