Overview

Step back into the 19th century heyday of Portuguese rail travel with a stay at the Editory Riverside Hotel.

The Editory Riverside is located within Lisbon’s famous Estacao de Santa Apolonia, one of country’s oldest and busiest railway stations. Its stately façade has been a prominent landmark on the city’s waterfront since 1865, with a neoclassical design courtesy of architect Angel Arribas Ugarte. Its original, distinctive red colour scheme made a welcome return in 2022 – the station was painted sky blue in the 1990s but reverted back to red during the recent renovations which created the Riverside Hotel.

Despite its popularity as a transport hub, it’s only now in the 21st century that accommodations have been incorporated into the station’s infrastructure, with the whole of the southern wing of this vast structure being converted into a modern and luxurious hotel. There are 126 rooms in total, from cosy standard station rooms to superior river view rooms, and the simple décor and uncluttered furnishing are comfortable and welcoming. The on-site Ipmulso restaurant has a more-modern, boutique feel, which is reflected in its menu of local, seasonal cuisine.

It’s short stroll along the Avenida Infante Dom Henrique to many of Lisbon’s most-celebrated landmarks, including the Praca do Comercio and the Arco da Rua Augusta, and medieval Alfama is on your doorstep. Of course, Santa Apolonia’s platforms are even closer, making the Riverside the ideal hotel if you’re exploring Portugal by train – with departures north to the second city of Porto and historic Coimbra, and east to Entroncamento, one of the country’s most-important railway hubs, and the delighful Templar town of Tomar.
