Overview
The M’ar de Ar Aqueduto is a five-star boutique hotel in the historic city of Evora.
The original building dates back to 15th century and was palatial home of the Sepulveda family. It’s position by the Porta Velha da Lagoa, the northern gate in Evora’s medieval city walls, is indicative of the high-status of the Sepulveda dynasty and of their palace home.
As the hotel was extended, adding a modern boutique wing which houses the sixty-four guest rooms, great care was also taken to preserve the invaluable historic features of the old building – particularly its magnificent Manueline windows and the imposing vaulted ceilings which arch over the guest lounge and bar.
By contrast, the décor of the guest rooms is light, clean and contemporary – balcony rooms have views of the garden, with the impressive Agua de Prata aqueduct disappearing off into Evora’s northern suburbs. Our favourite garden view rooms are on the ground floor, and have private terraces with direct access to the outdoor pool, sun terrace and garden, which in turn lead you into the spa and gym. There’s also the on-site Degust’Ar restaurant where you can sample the best of the Alentejo region’s seasonal cuisine.
The M’ar de Ar Aqueduto is ideally located for exploring the UNESCO-protected city centre on foot – it’s also an excellent base for visiting many of Portugal’s celebrated medieval hilltop towns, with Monsaraz, Estramoz and Elvas within easy driving distance.
